Guinea Siguiri Agricultural Development Activity (SADA)

The Siguiri Agriculture Development Activity (SADA) is a private sector Global Development Alliance between the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Guinea and Société AngloGold Ashanti de Guinée (SAG). This ACDI/VOCA-implemented activity employed a private sector-led approach to increase opportunities for individuals and communities affected by mining activities in the Siguiri prefecture. Throughout the life of project, SADA advanced this intended outcome through investments, capacity building, and stakeholder coordination in the cashew value chain, including establishing productive cashew nurseries and expanding extension, inputs, and market access services for smallholder farmers. SADA’s project design originally anticipated leveraging SAG’s medium-scale processing facility as the principal cashew offtaker. Although the SAG factory was not completed during the project’s period of performance, SADA still managed to effectively facilitate market linkages between local buyers and participating cashew producers to advance the activity’s primary outcome.

Project Objectives

SADA consisted of two key objectives:

Improve rural commercial input and service supply system capacity for cashew farmers.
Increase cooperation and strengthen linkages between cashew market system actors.

Project Activities and Approaches

Activity 1: Build and strengthen the capacity of cashew producer organizations.
Activity 2: Improve access to quality inputs by supporting a rural agro-dealers activity.
Activity 3: Expand extension services to cashew farmers via agricultural village agents.
Activity 4: Increase firms’ and farmers’ access to finance to purchase high-quality inputs.
Activity 5: Facilitate market linkages between producers and buyers.

Achieved Project Results

1,540 individuals benefited directly from USAID support through the activity including 29.3% women and 27.9% youth
23.75% increase in total actual sales among project cashew producers (cumulatively worth $385,266)
823 producers linked to village-level savings and credit services via active village savings and loan association memberships, including 21.4% youth and 37% women
Distributed a total of $18,518.89 worth of grants to four cashew commercial nurseries, which produced 36,237 seedlings in 2020 (226% of SADA’s original target)
All 21 SADA producer organizations have successfully obtained or renewed official licenses from the Siguiri prefecture authorities
