ACDI/VOCA implemented a subcontract for the Irrigation Sector Reform (ISR) Activity—funded by Millennium Challenge Account-Moldova—to improve national water resource management.
The project built institutional capacity to effectively manage rehabilitated irrigation systems toward improving Moldova’s overall capacity to manage increasing water demand amid limited water resources.
ACDI/VOCA provided short-term technical assistance in organizational development and management, agricultural productivity improvements, and on-farm water management. Euroconsult Mott MacDonald was the project’s prime.
Climate Change Could Hurt Agriculture, Economy
A 2009 United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) report suggests that climate change could negatively affect Moldova’s environment and economy. Moldova’s surface water supplies could decrease by 16–20 percent within the next 15 years, according to the report, harming sectors like agriculture—one of the country’s economic mainstays.
A drought in 2007 caused $1 billion in losses in Moldova and foreshadows the future for Moldova, UNDP says.
A former Soviet Union republic, Moldova is ranked 99 out of 169 countries on the United Nations Human Development Index.
