Representatives from the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation (MOALR) visited our Egypt Advanced Marketing and Agribusiness Logistics (AMAL) project earlier this month. AMAL integrates smallholder farmers into Egypt’s export market to improve livelihoods.
Dr. Ihab El Eisawy, Head of the Food Technology Research Institute, and Ms. Samah El Kady, Director of the Agricultural Foreign Affairs Sector, visited AMAL project sites in the central Egyptican city of Sohag. The visit started with a stop at the Bait Khallaf Association for Agricultural Development where the team met with beneficiaries to learn about AMAL’s onion-growing activities. A consultant spoke about regional onion-cultivation problems and the technical assistance AMAL provides farmers to overcome these problems.
Next, the team visited the Rural Woman Community Development Association in Shoraneya and met with the association’s chairperson and a few representative farmers to learn about the association. Female farmers proudly spoke of their roles earning a living for their families and how AMAL helped them increase their yields and returns. The visit concluded with a training for board members and lead farmers that provided project participants an opportunity to network with exporters and MOALR representatives.
