U.S. Department of Agriculture Food for Progress Bangladesh Climate Smart Livestock

The U.S. Department of Agriculture Food for Progress Bangladesh Climate Smart Livestock project will build on the Government of Bangladesh and donor commitments and investments to raise productivity and trade in the country’s livestock sector. Through our inclusive, climate-smart market systems development approach, our interventions will promote access to knowledge, services, relationships, investment, and markets for 250,000 smallholder farmers across 16 districts. All project activities will reinforce local climate change adaptation and promote gender and cultural equity and youth engagement in agriculture.

Project Objectives

Increase the productivity of livestock (cattle and goat) by improving animal health and adoption of new production technologies, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and conserving land resources
Improve and increase the trade of livestock by linking producers to end buyers and increasing access to investment capital

Project Activities

Support local public and private sector actors to develop, pilot, and expand the use of cost-effective, climate-smart agricultural practices to improve milk efficiency while reducing methane emissions
Address gaps in the animal health management system, including through the commercialization of animal health service models
Strengthen market linkages through improved supply chain management practices, increased product diversification, and adherence to sanitary and safety standards
Increase livestock farmers’ access to credit lines with climate mitigation conditions
Develop a more comprehensive feed R&D system, improve the identification, diagnosis, treatment, and control of priority diseases, and build interagency and intersectoral coordination on climate-smart agriculture policy and information systems

Anticipated Results

Incentivize the adoption of cost-effective climate-smart agriculture technologies and practices for 200,000 farmers
Reduce greenhouse gas emissions from livestock with 60% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions per unit of beef produced and 23% per unit of goat produced
Grow sales by $940 million
